The iPhone 12 Pro Max launched in late 2020 with the first sensor-shift OIS, the first LiDAR scanner on iPhone, MagSafe debut, Ceramic Shield, and 5G. Five years on in Bali, the issues we treat at our Kerobokan workshop are predictable — and almost all of them are economically worth fixing rather than replacing.
Battery is the dominant issue. Most 12 Pro Max units we see now have battery health between 65–78%. iOS aggressively throttles the A14 below 80%, so the phone feels slow because the chip is being held back to protect a tired 3687 mAh cell. A battery replacement on a 12 Pro Max is the single most transformative repair we do — the phone genuinely feels new again.
Lightning port wear at 5 years. Five years of plug-unplug cycles, often with sketchy convenience-store cables in Kuta and Seminyak, have deformed the Lightning contacts on most units. Add coastal salt air and you get charging failures even before the battery hits 80%. We replace the full assembly (also restores primary microphone audio).
MagSafe alignment after third-party repairs. A surprising number of 12 Pro Max units that come to us have already been opened by other shops — and the MagSafe magnet ring is misaligned. The phone won't snap to MagSafe chargers correctly, or it sticks at an angle. We re-centre the magnet array during reassembly, restoring proper MagSafe accessory snap.
Ceramic Shield isn't shatterproof. The "4x better drop performance" Apple advertised in 2020 helps with low drops onto soft surfaces. Concrete sidewalks in Denpasar, marble villa floors in Seminyak, and Bali's ubiquitous tile floors still crack the screen. We restore full OLED with True Tone calibration.
LiDAR damage from drops. The LiDAR scanner is part of the rear camera module. Hard drops can crack the protective cover or damage the sensor itself. AR apps stop working, depth maps in portraits become unreliable. Camera module swap restores all functionality.
A long-time Ubud resident's 12 Pro Max had become his "second phone" because it felt too slow for daily use. Battery health was at 67%, iOS was throttling the A14 to its lowest performance state, and the phone died by lunch. We installed a fresh OEM-grade cell, ran the calibration cycle, battery health reset to 100%. He came back the next week, surprised at how snappy iOS felt — saved him an unnecessary $1000 upgrade.
A 5-year owner from Sanur had two issues: the Lightning port would only charge at certain angles, and his MagSafe wallet kept falling off. Twenty minutes of fully submerged spring water exposure. She brought it in within 4 hours — we opened, ultrasonic-cleaned the logic board, replaced two oxidised flex cables, and resealed. Phone was back in service the next day with all functions verified including LiDAR and MagSafe.
The 12 Pro Max stainless steel frame uses standard adhesive bonding (precisely 80°C separation temperature). We prep the OEM replacement parts and verify the new battery cell health reading before installation.
Battery swap takes 30 minutes (most common 12 Pro Max repair by far). Display replacement runs 1–2 hours including True Tone calibration. Lightning port assembly is 1–2 hours. Camera module work (including LiDAR) is 1–2 hours. Board-level micro-soldering for liquid damage is 1–3 days.
Every Pro Max repair ends with a calibration pass: True Tone, FaceID, sensor-shift OIS, LiDAR depth-mapping verification, MagSafe magnet array centring (critical for 12 Pro Max), and a 30-minute load test on the new battery. Gaskets re-seated for IP68 splash resistance.
Most impactful repair on a 12 Pro Max in 2026. iOS stops throttling the A14 once the new battery is installed — the phone genuinely feels new again. 45 minutes, fraction of an upgrade cost.

On a 5-year-old phone, combined repair cost approaches 80% of a used 12 Pro Max market price, with no warranty on board-level work. At this point a refurbished 13 Pro Max or upgrade is the better value.

MagSafe magnet rings are properly centred during reassembly — critical on this model since misalignment is a common third-party repair defect we see. We never install refurbished batteries or aftermarket cells.
