The MacBook Air M3 15" (A3114) launched in early 2024 as the largest fanless MacBook Apple has ever made — a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, MagSafe 3, dual external display support, Wi-Fi 6E, and the M3 chip. It's the favourite of Bali video editors and visual designers who want screen real estate without Pro-tier weight. Here's what we see most.
Larger lid = more drop damage. Same vulnerability as M2 15" Air — the 15.3-inch display is more prone to flex damage during scooter transport and accidental drops than 13" Airs. Bali stone tile floors and motorbike spills crack panels regularly.
Dual external display thermal stress. The M3 Air gained dual external display support, but driving two 4K displays + onboard panel runs the M3 hot — and the fanless 15" chassis has more aluminium to dissipate but also more heat to handle. We see early A3114 units with thermal-related issues in users running dual-display Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve setups.
Fanless thermal in larger chassis. The bigger aluminium body is a better heatsink than 13" Airs, but sustained 4K video work in 33°C+ ambient still pushes M3 into throttling within 8–10 minutes. Common scenario: content creator editing in Ubud villa with no AC.
MagSafe 3 port debris. Same magnetic recess issue as other M-series Airs — sand, salt residue, dust accumulate. Cleaning usually resolves charging intermittency.
Liquid spills via larger keyboard. Full-size keyboard with extended speakers gives liquids more entry points. Coffee at Crate Café, splash damage at beach clubs, smoothies at co-working spaces.
PLN power surges. Bali grid surges blow MagSafe charging circuits — surge protector strongly recommended for any laptop kept in Bali long-term.
Battery aging. The larger 66.5 Wh battery degrades like any lithium cell in tropical conditions. After 1–1.5 years most A3114 units we see are still at 90%+ health, but heavy creators see runtime decreases.
A US travel video editor in Ubud was driving two 4K external displays from his A3114 for a Premiere Pro project. Within 12 minutes M3 throttled and renders crawled. Diagnosis: thermal interface material under M3 had a manufacturing variation worsened by Bali ambient. We re-pasted the thermal layer, tested with 1-hour render burn, restored full M3 performance.

The A3114 bottom case removes via 6 pentalobe screws plus hidden clips. Internal flex cables for trackpad, keyboard, battery, MagSafe, and antennas need careful disconnection — extra care on the larger 15" chassis where flex cables are longer.
Battery + top case swap takes 2.5–3.5 hours (larger top case than 13"). 15.3" Liquid Retina display assembly is 1–2 days (parts ordering). Logic board micro-soldering for liquid or surge damage is 1–3 days. MagSafe board replacement is 2 hours. Thermal re-paste is 2–3 hours.

Usually debris in the magnetic recess (cleaning fixes it). If MagSafe board damaged, board replacement is 2 hours.
Apple Silicon integrates RAM and SSD controller into the SoC die — if M3 itself is destroyed, recovery is impractical and storage data is encrypted to that specific chip. Refurbished A3114 or upgrade to M4 15" Air is the better value.
