The MacBook Pro 16" M2 Pro/Max (A2780) launched in early 2023 with the M2 Pro / M2 Max chip, Wi-Fi 6E, HDMI 2.1 (8K@60), and the same 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR + MagSafe 3 + 6-speaker system + dual-fan cooling as the M1 generation. Two years in, here's what we see most.
Active cooling = dust intake. Dual fans pull Bali's volcanic dust, salt air, and pet hair through bottom intake vents. After 1.5–2 years, fan blades coat. Annual cleaning extends life dramatically.
M2 Pro/Max thermal demands. M2 Pro/Max runs hotter than M1 Pro/Max under sustained load — Final Cut renders, DaVinci Resolve exports, ML training. In Bali's 32–35°C ambient, sustained workloads throttle within 12–15 minutes if cooling is degraded.
XDR mini-LED panel is expensive to replace. 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR — sourcing quality replacements requires care.
6-speaker system damage. Same vulnerable speaker cutouts as A2485 give liquid spills more entry points.
MagSafe 3 port debris. Sand, salt residue, dust accumulate. Cleaning usually resolves charging intermittency.
HDMI 2.1 and SD slot oxidation. A2780 upgraded HDMI to 2.1 (8K@60) but port still vulnerable to humidity oxidation.
Liquid spills via large keyboard. 16" Pro's full-size keyboard with extended speakers gives liquids more entry points.
PLN power surges. Bali grid surges blow MagSafe charging circuits — surge protector strongly recommended.
Battery aging. The 100 Wh battery degrades in tropical conditions. After 1.5–2 years most A2780 units have battery health between 88–94%.
A London colourist working from a Ubud villa found his A2780 throttling within 6 minutes of starting DaVinci renders, dual fans at full speed. Diagnosis: 1.5 years of dust buildup on fans plus dried thermal paste on M2 Max. Deep-cleaned cooling system, re-pasted M2 Max thermal interface. Restored full sustained M2 Max performance.
A US photographer spilled iced flat white across her A2780 keyboard during a Lightroom session. Powered off immediately, brought it within an hour. Disassembled, ultrasonic-cleaned logic board, replaced corroded flex cables. Recovered fully in 2 days.

Apple Silicon integrates RAM and SSD controller into the SoC die — recovery is impractical. Refurbished A2780 or upgrade to M3/M4 Pro 16" is the better value.
