The iPhone 11 Pro Max launched in 2019 with the A13 Bionic chip, the first triple-camera iPhone with Night Mode, a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, and the largest battery Apple had shipped at the time (3969 mAh). Six years on, this phone is in our Kerobokan workshop almost daily — and almost every visit is for the same reason.
Battery is the dominant issue, period. Six years of Bali's 30–35°C heat have devastated original 11 Pro Max batteries — most units we see now sit at 55–68% health. The legendary all-day battery life is long gone. iOS aggressively throttles the A13, so the phone feels slow because the chip is held back to protect a worn cell. A battery replacement makes the phone genuinely feel new again.
Lightning port near end of life. Six years of plug-unplug cycles, often with cheap convenience-store cables, plus salt air at coastal residences — most 11 Pro Max ports are deformed, corroded, or both. Symptoms: cable falls out, charges only at specific angles, "accessory not supported" errors. Full assembly replacement restores reliable charging.
Camera lens fogging. The triple-camera module on the 11 Pro Max isn't as well-sealed as newer iPhones. Bali humidity finds its way past the gaskets and condenses inside the lens housing — usually appearing as a fog patch in morning shots. We can disassemble and clean the camera module, replacing seals as needed.
Matte back glass cracks. The frosted matte back glass is surprisingly fragile and breaks the IP68 seal when cracked. Cosmetically it's a downgrade; functionally it makes the phone vulnerable to splash damage. Replacement is possible but more expensive than screen repair.
Burn-in from UV exposure. Six years of Bali's intense UV light through the Super Retina XDR OLED has caused mild burn-in on some units — typically visible as ghost imagery of frequently-used app icons or status bar elements. Display replacement resolves it; some users tolerate it as cosmetic.
A long-time Sanur expat brought in his 11 Pro Max convinced he needed a new phone — it had become unusable, slow apps, dying by 11 AM. Battery health was at 62% and iOS was throttling the A13 to its lowest performance state. We installed a fresh OEM-grade cell, ran the calibration cycle, battery health reset to 100%. He came back two weeks later, surprised at how snappy iOS felt — saved him an unnecessary 1500 USD upgrade.
A Bali NGO volunteer had two issues after a Komodo Island trip: Lightning port stopped charging reliably, and the main camera was foggy in morning shots. Salt air and humidity over a week of boat life had taken a toll. We replaced the full Lightning assembly and disassembled-cleaned-resealed the camera module. Both fixed in one visit, total cost a fraction of replacing the phone.
A 6-year owner from Canggu noticed faint ghost outlines of her Instagram and Camera app icons whenever she used a light wallpaper — burn-in from years of UV exposure on the OLED. We replaced the Super Retina XDR display panel and recalibrated True Tone. Phone looked brand new on the outside-in, A13 Bionic still handling iOS 18 smoothly.
The 11 Pro Max stainless steel frame uses standard adhesive bonding (precisely 80°C separation temperature). At 6 years old, internal flex cables can be brittle — we work carefully to avoid damaging the existing cabling during disassembly.
Battery swap takes 30 minutes (the dominant 11 Pro Max repair). Display replacement runs 1–2 hours. Lightning port assembly is 1–2 hours. Camera lens fogging clean-and-reseal is 1–2 hours. Back glass replacement is 2–3 hours (more complex than newer models). Board-level micro-soldering for liquid damage is 1–3 days.
Every repair ends with a calibration pass: True Tone colour balance, FaceID dot projector alignment, OIS verification on all three lenses, Night Mode test, and a 30-minute load test on the new battery. Gaskets re-seated where possible (IP68 may not fully restore on a 6-year-old chassis).
The most impactful repair on a 6-year-old 11 Pro Max — universally needed. iOS stops throttling the A13 once the new battery is installed; the phone genuinely feels new again. 45 minutes, fraction of a new iPhone cost.
Super Retina XDR OLED panel is replaceable in 1–2 hours. Restores the original 1200-nit HDR peak brightness and True Tone calibration.
Universal at the 6-year mark in Bali. Full Lightning flex assembly replacement (also restores primary microphone). 1–2 hours, restores fast charging reliably.
Common on 11 Pro Max in Bali humidity. We disassemble, clean the camera module, replace seals. 1–2 hours, fraction of a new camera module cost.
On a 6-year-old phone, combined repair cost can approach the price of a used 12 Pro Max which is significantly more capable. We will be honest — at this point upgrade is the better long-term value.
For the iPhone 11 Pro Max we work exclusively with OEM-grade parts — same-spec components manufactured in the same facilities as the originals, often by the same suppliers Apple uses, but sold through the parallel-import channel.
What that means in practice: displays are Super Retina XDR OLED panels matching the original 1200-nit HDR peak brightness with ΔE 1.5 colour calibration. Batteries are factory-fresh cells with the same chemistry and battery management chip — iOS reports 100% health on first boot. The original 3969 mAh capacity is fully restored. Triple camera modules come pre-aligned for OIS and Night Mode, with final calibration on our optical bench. We never install refurbished batteries or aftermarket cells — the safety risk on a 3969 mAh battery is not worth saving 200,000 IDR.
