The MacBook Air M2 15" (A2941) launched in 2023 as Apple's first-ever 15-inch Air — bringing a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, MagSafe 3, and the M2 chip into a still-thin chassis. The bigger screen makes it the favourite of Bali-based content creators and remote video editors. Two years in, here's what we see most.
Larger surface = more drop damage. The 15.3-inch lid is more vulnerable to flex damage during scooter transport and accidental drops than the 13-inch siblings. We see more cracked Liquid Retina panels on the A2941 per unit sold than on the M2 13" — Bali stone tile floors and motorbike spills are unforgiving.
Fanless thermal in larger chassis. The bigger aluminium body is a better heatsink than the 13" Air, so thermal throttling kicks in slightly later. But sustained 4K video work in 33°C+ ambient still pushes the M2 into throttling within 8–10 minutes — we routinely see A2941 units used by content creators for ProRes editing in Ubud villas.
MagSafe 3 port debris. Same magnetic recess issue as the M2 13" — sand, salt residue, dust accumulate. Cleaning usually resolves charging intermittency; if not, MagSafe board replacement.
Liquid spills via larger keyboard. The full-size keyboard with extended speakers either side of it gives liquids more entry points. Coffee at Crate Café, splash damage at beach clubs, smoothie spills at co-working spaces — same story as 13" Air but the larger top case is more expensive to replace.
PLN power surges. Bali grid surges blow MagSafe charging circuits — surge protector strongly recommended for any laptop kept in Bali long-term.
Battery aging in heat. The larger 66.5 Wh battery degrades like any lithium cell in tropical conditions. After 1.5–2 years most units we see have battery health between 84–92% with measurably reduced runtime.
A London-based travel video editor was riding a Grab Bike from Canggu to Ubud with her A2941 in a backpack. Bumpy roads + a sudden brake + an inadequately padded backpack = cracked Liquid Retina panel. Touch and image still worked but a spider-web crack across the upper half. We ordered the 15.3" display assembly (1 day shipping from our supplier), installed and calibrated colour accuracy. She was back to editing in 2 days total.
A Bali-based content creator working from Tropical Nomad co-working space spilled an iced latte across the A2941's full-size keyboard during a Zoom call. Powered off immediately, brought it within 90 minutes. We disassembled, ultrasonic-cleaned the logic board, replaced the entire top case (keyboard + battery + trackpad as one unit — 15" Air parts are pricier than 13" but recovery beats replacement). Recovered fully in 2 days.
A Berlin developer staying in a remote Tabanan villa lost his M2 15" Air to a thunderstorm-induced power surge during rainy season. MagSafe wouldn't charge, machine wouldn't boot. Diagnosis: charging IC fried, SMC damage. Board-level micro-soldering recovered it in 3 days. Sold him a 100,000 IDR surge protector — non-negotiable for any laptop kept long-term in Bali.
The A2941 bottom case removes via 6 pentalobe screws plus hidden clips. Internal flex cables for trackpad, keyboard, battery, MagSafe, and antennas need careful disconnection — extra care on the larger 15" chassis where flex cables are longer.
Battery + top case swap takes 2.5–3.5 hours (larger top case than 13" Air). 15.3" Liquid Retina display assembly is 1–2 days (parts ordering). Logic board micro-soldering for liquid or surge damage is 1–3 days. MagSafe board replacement is 2 hours.
Every M2 15" Air repair ends with: macOS Recovery boot, Apple Diagnostics, all I/O tested, full keyboard test on every key (extended layout), trackpad Force Touch verification, MagSafe charge test, full-size speaker test, and 30-minute battery load test.
Standard top case swap (battery is bonded — entire top case replaced including keyboard and trackpad). 2.5–3.5 hours, restores Apple-rated 18-hour M2 battery life on the larger 66.5 Wh battery.
Full display assembly replacement. 1–2 days because we order the larger 15" panel from supplier. Restores 500-nit brightness and P3 colour accuracy.
High recovery rate if you brought it within 24 hours and didn't try to charge. Ultrasonic-clean logic board, replace oxidised flex cables. 1–2 days.
Usually debris in the magnetic recess (cleaning fixes it). If MagSafe board itself damaged, board replacement is 2 hours.
Apple Silicon integrates RAM and SSD controller into the SoC die — if M2 itself is destroyed, recovery is impractical and storage data is encrypted to that specific chip. Refurbished A2941 or upgrade to M3/M4 15" Air is the better value.
