The MacBook Pro 16" 2019 (A2141) was the last Intel MacBook Pro Apple ever made — Intel Core i7/i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5000-series GPU, Touch Bar, four USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports (no MagSafe), dual fans, and the redesigned scissor-switch Magic Keyboard that finally fixed the butterfly fiasco. Six years on, this is one of the most thermally challenged MacBooks we see in our Kerobokan workshop — and one of the most rewarding to maintain because it can be kept fast for years more with the right care.
Thermal management is the headline issue. The Intel i9 in the high-spec configurations runs HOT — Apple's thermal design barely contained it even in temperate climates. Bali's 32–35°C ambient + i9 sustained workloads (Final Cut renders, Handbrake encodes, Xcode builds) produce sustained 95–100°C CPU temperatures and aggressive throttling. Cooling system maintenance is critical, more so than for any other Pro we service.
Dual fans = serious dust accumulation. The A2141 has the largest fans of any 16" Pro Apple ever made — they pull lots of Bali air. After 5-6 years of Bali use the fan blades are coated, heatsink fins clog, and thermal paste has fully dried out. Annual cleaning + thermal re-paste makes a transformative difference — we routinely see A2141 units that "felt unusable" become whisper-quiet again.
AMD Radeon Pro GPU heat. The discrete AMD GPU adds significant heat under graphics load — Adobe apps, Final Cut, gaming. Combined with Intel i9 thermals = the cooling system needs to be in pristine condition.
USB-C only — no MagSafe. The A2141 charges via USB-C only — there's no MagSafe. After 6 years of plug-unplug cycles plus Bali coastal salt air, the USB-C ports show wear. Charging-only port replacement is straightforward; data + Thunderbolt port replacement is more complex.
Touch Bar failures. Touch Bar module connected via flex cable. Heat stress, liquid spills near keyboard, humidity can kill it.
Battery aging. The 100 Wh battery (largest legal for airline carry-on) degrades in heat. After 5-6 years most A2141 units we see have battery health between 65–80% and significantly reduced runtime.
Liquid spills, PLN power surges. Same as other Pros — coffee at cafés, splash damage, grid surges. Surge protector strongly recommended.
A long-time Ubud-based video editor's A2141 with i9 had become unusable for sustained renders — fans at full speed within 2 minutes, throttling to 30% performance, sometimes shutting down from heat. Diagnosis: 5 years of accumulated Bali dust + completely dried thermal paste on i9 and AMD GPU. We disassembled, deep-cleaned both fans and heatsinks, applied fresh thermal paste to both i9 and AMD Radeon, replaced fan bearings. Result: rendered a 4K project that previously crashed at minute 8 — completed full 90-minute render without throttling.
A Sydney-based filmmaker working from Bali for 4 years had two issues: Touch Bar gone dark plus left USB-C port wouldn't charge reliably. Diagnosis: Touch Bar flex cable corroded from a coffee splash a year prior; USB-C left port had pin wear from constant charging. Replaced Touch Bar module + left USB-C charging port assembly. Done in 2 days, fully restored.
A Russian developer's 6-year-old A2141 battery health was at 68% — couldn't make it through a 4-hour flight without dying. We installed a fresh 100 Wh OEM-grade battery (the A2141 uses adhesive — easier than newer Pros), ran calibration cycle, restored Apple-rated 11-hour battery life. He came back to confirm the 14-hour Singapore-Amsterdam flight was finally manageable.
A2141 bottom case via 6 pentalobe screws plus hidden Torx. Internal flex cables for Touch Bar, keyboard, battery, trackpad, dual fans, USB-C ports, speakers, antennas need careful disconnection.
Battery swap (100 Wh) takes 2–3 hours. Display assembly is 1–2 days. Touch Bar replacement is 3–4 hours. Critical: dual fan + heatsink cleaning + thermal re-paste on both i9 and AMD GPU is 3–4 hours (most impactful repair on this model). USB-C port replacement is 2–4 hours per port. Logic board micro-soldering 1–3 days.

The single most impactful repair on a 6-year-old A2141. Deep-clean dual fans + heatsinks + thermal re-paste on both i9 and AMD GPU. 3–4 hours, transformative performance and noise improvement.

USB-C port wear after 6 years of plug-unplug + Bali salt air. Charging-only port replacement is 2 hours; full Thunderbolt port replacement is 3–4 hours.
On a 6-year-old Intel Pro 16", combined repair cost approaches refurbished M1 Pro 16" price — and Apple Silicon is dramatically cooler and faster. We will be honest — at this point upgrade to M1 Pro/Max 16" or newer is the better long-term value.
For the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 (A2141) we work exclusively with OEM-grade parts.
What that means in practice: display assemblies are LG-fabricated Retina True Tone panels with the original 500-nit brightness and P3 wide colour gamut. Batteries are factory-fresh 100 Wh cells (largest legal for airline carry-on). Touch Bar modules are direct OEM replacements with proper Touch ID pairing. Fans use the same blade design as Apple's originals. Thermal paste we use is high-end Arctic MX-6 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for both i9 and AMD GPU — better than Apple's factory paste. We never install aftermarket batteries — safety risk on a 100 Wh cell isn't worth saving 500,000 IDR.
